Our discussion on December 2nd will be about “The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women” by Kate Moore. Book Summary: As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” were considered the luckiest alive — until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America’s biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights.

We hope that you will enjoy this brief departure from fiction into a dark and mysterious window of American history. Not only does this novel have eBook and audio-book versions on hoopla, the Rappahannock Community College library has two physical copies of The Radium Girls as well – one on each campus!
Call number HD6067.2.U6.M66 2017.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, December 2nd at 5pm. Please join us in the Warsaw campus library group room to discuss the trials and tribulations of these working women in the early twentieth century.
