Coming to us from a creek on the Chesapeake Bay …
Gail Wilson Kenna has taught writing and literature in university programs in Germany, Malaysia, Venezuela, Colombia, and four U.S. universities/colleges. Her last full-time position was at American University in D.C. Since 2005 she has taught literature and writing courses for Rappahannock Institute for Lifelong Learning (RILL) through the Rappahannock Community College Educational Foundation, Inc.
Gail’s contributions to magazines and newspapers are numerous, as have been her writing awards. In 2012, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference awarded her the Donald Axinn fiction scholarship for a novel in progress. Gail’s published books include: Along the Gold Rush Trail, used in adult ESL, a book in print from 1983 to 2003. Her second book, written and published in Caracas, Venezuela, was Face of the Avila. Her third book, Beyond the Wall, is a compilation of essays that documents her four years of working with incarcerated North Americans in Venezuela’s infamous prisons. This book, awarded a Puffin Foundation grant in 2000, was distributed widely to journalists, policy makers, and organizations concerned with the ‘war on drugs’ in South America. More recently Gail has written her first book for children, The Contumacious Cat. A third edition is currently under production.
A native of California, a graduate of the University of Southern California, a graduate student at San Francisco State and U.C. Berkeley, she holds a Master of Arts degree. Since 2017, Gail has served as the judge/sponsor for Creative Nonfiction in the Soul Keats annual literary competition in San Francisco, now in its 29th year.
